Contemporary Art Practice at UIC

At the School of Art at the University of Illinois Chicago, contemporary art is not defined by a single medium, discipline, or methodology. Students are encouraged to move fluidly between drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, moving image, digital media, installation, performance, social practice, and emerging technologies, developing practices that reflect the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary art today.

Students in the BFA in Art develop rigorous studio practices while engaging a broad range of contemporary approaches to art making. Working across concentrations that include Studio Arts, Photography, Moving Image, and New Media Arts, students create work that reflects both personal vision and critical engagement with contemporary culture. The BFA in Art Education prepares future educators who view teaching as a creative and transformative practice. Through field experiences and professional preparation, students contribute to Chicago's diverse educational landscape while advancing equitable access to arts education throughout the region.

Students in the Interdisciplinary Education in the Arts (IDEA) program explore creative work across disciplines, combining artistic practice with interests that may span education, social sciences, humanities, technology, and community-based learning. The program encourages students to build individualized pathways that reflect the increasingly interconnected nature of contemporary creative careers.
